Terms of Use
Updated Oct 6, 2026
By using PlainVIN you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.
These terms are between you and PlainVIN (“we”, “us”), which runs plainvin.com.
What PlainVIN provides
PlainVIN republishes and explains public vehicle records from U.S. government sources for general information. It is not a vehicle inspection, a vehicle history report, legal advice or professional mechanical advice.
No warranty
We work hard to show the records accurately and date them, but government datasets can contain errors, gaps and delays, and we can make mistakes too. The site is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. Always confirm open recalls for a specific vehicle with NHTSA or the manufacturer, and have a used car inspected before you buy.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, PlainVIN isn’t liable for any loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, the site.
Acceptable use
- Don’t scrape the site at a rate that degrades it for others, or attempt to break its security.
- Don’t use the site or its tools to break the law, including privacy and consumer-protection laws.
- Our VIN lookup relies on NHTSA’s public service; automated bulk decoding through our site isn’t allowed. Use NHTSA’s vPIC API directly instead.
Content and trademarks
Government data shown on PlainVIN is public domain where marked. Our text, design and code are our own and may not be copied wholesale. Vehicle makes and model names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify vehicles; no affiliation or endorsement is implied.

We link to official tools such as NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup. We’re not responsible for other websites’ content or availability.
