How We Use AI

Updated Oct 6, 2026

We use AI tools in building PlainVIN. Here is exactly how, and where people stay in charge.

Where AI helps

  • Drafting text. Reference sections, FAQ answers, guides and the first draft of “What this means” summaries are drafted with AI assistance from the page’s own data and from primary sources such as NHTSA pages and federal regulations.
  • Writing code. AI helps write the software that imports official datasets and builds pages.

Where AI is never used

  • Numbers. Every count, rating, price and date is read directly from the official datasets by our import code. AI never produces or estimates a figure.
  • Recall text. NHTSA’s summary, consequence and remedy text is shown word for word.
  • Your VIN. Decoding is done by NHTSA’s own service.

Human review

A summary is shown as “reviewed” only after an editor on the responsible desk has checked every number against the records and approved the wording. Pages without a reviewed summary say so and aren’t offered to search engines. Guides cite the sources they rely on.
